The concert bands are separated by ability level and students are placed in classes by audition each semester. All the concert bands will be working on music in preparation for UIL competitions and Solo competitions. Parents will be given a complete calendar for all spring events. Other rehearsals and clinics will be scheduled as needed. Attendance at all rehearsals and performances is mandatory.
Band students are divided into four performing bands that meet for a full class period every day for the entire school year and have after school sectionals beginning in January.
REGION BAND
Throughout marching session, our members are also preparing challenging etudes on their instruments for audition for Freshman Region, All-Region, All-Area, and All-State Band. Participation is required for students in Wind Ensemble and optional to the other bands. However, many students still choose to challenge themselves and audition since they have been working on their Region music throughout the marching season.
SOLO & ENSEMBLE COMPETITION
All TWHS Band students are required to select a solo piece of music for the Solo & Ensemble Competition held each Spring. The competition showcases each musician’s soloistic and individual skills. Solo and Ensemble is an opportunity for students to perform in front of professional judges and receive feedback.
There are three rounds during the competition: Prelims, Semis and Finals. The much-anticipated competition is sponsored by the TWHS Band Booster Club.
CONCERT ENSEMBLES
Wind Ensemble
The Wind Ensemble performs music of the highest degree of difficulty. Performances will include a UIL Contest, one or more invitational festivals, two or more spring concerts, and special events. Each student is required to have private lessons once a week along with an extra full woodwind/brass/percussion section rehearsal.
Wind Symphony
Wind Symphony is the second ranked band. The band attends all UIL music competitions. The band rehearses during the regular school day and private lessons are required.
Symphonic Band
The Symphonic Band is the third ranked band. The band attends all UIL music competitions. The band rehearses during the regular school day and private lessons are encouraged.
Concert Band
The Concert Band is the fourth ranked band. The band attends all UIL music competitions. The band rehearses during the regular school day and private lessons are encouraged.
