“Band, for me, was the best combination of everything that made me, ME: music, community, leadership, challenge, fun, and a place to belong. I loved being part of something bigger than myself, sharing incredible experiences with great people, and learning from wise teachers and peer leaders.”

Where you are now

I live in The Woodlands. After a roundabout career across music, ministry, business and digital marketing, I’m stepping into a new role this fall as the beginning brass teacher at Mitchell Intermediate School.

A favorite memory from the program

My very first trip to Grand Nationals. We gathered for an impromptu rehearsal in the middle of a public park, arched up around a huge fountain. It was cold and beautiful outside, and I can still picture the clouds and blue sky. I have such clear memories of feeling proud, grateful, and almost in disbelief that I was getting to participate in something so incredible with my very best friends.

How band shaped who I am today

Being in band helped cultivate my love for education, particularly music education. Though I never imagined this program would be a lifelong thread, I’m proud to once again contribute to the TWHS Band, now as a parent and a member of the fine arts education vertical team. My high school participation connected me to some of the most meaningful professional experiences and relationships I still treasure today.

Someone who made a difference

I will forever be grateful to Mr. Johnson, my high school band director, for seeing the potential in me and providing opportunities to excel both as a musician and as a leader. The culture he created gave me a platform where I felt encouraged to grow my confidence and skills in every way. I still admire him tremendously, and I’ll always be grateful for the impact he’s made on my life.

What I’d tell a current student

The time you have in band and guard will FLY BY. Give your best in rehearsals and performances, set meaningful goals for yourself, include everyone you can, and create the community you want to be part of. Whether you’re an All-State musician aspiring to a career in music, or you just love playing your instrument and dancing in the stands at football games, you are an important part of the program. You’re part of an amazing legacy, and if you leave the band and guard even better than you found it, you’ve done your job well.

One more thing for fellow alumni

Is it weird to say I think about you a lot?! (I do.) It’s been so fun being back “in band” on the parent side, and it’s brought back tons of memories. Send your pictures! socialmedia@twhsband.org
